Hope everyone had a great Christmas and is looking forward to the new year. Please see the attached meeting notice, for January’s meeting, and the meeting notes for December’s meeting. Also, it’s that time, again, so I have attached the dues form for 2012. Please bring your form and check to the January meeting or mail it to Scott McCabe, our treasurer, at the address listed on the form. Please be sure to update your contact information, so I can update our roster.

Hello All,
As an early heads-up, the September CFGA meeting will be on Wednesday, September 7th at the Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park. Open tour at 4 p.m., meeting at 5 p.m. with dinner following. A slide presentation of the Michigan Bus Trip will follow dinner. Mark your calenders as a trip to the Krohn is always worthwhile.

Mission Statement: The Cincinnati Flower Growers Association is an organization of growers, retailers, suppliers and educators dedicated to the promotion of flowers and the well being of those around us.

July 2011 Meeting Notes:

Welcome and Minutes

The meeting was hosted by Eason Horticultural Resources. President Elmer Grosser called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for attending. He thanked Eason for hosting.

The minutes were approved as sent, with a motion made by Jesse Hensen and seconded by Jordan Holtkamp.

Treasurer’s Report

Scott McCabe gave the treasurer’s report. Deposits were made for dinners, split-the-pot and dues. Payments were made to McCabe’s for the June meeting. No bills were presented.

Short Course is here. Booths are sold out. Things are looking good.

Hamilton County Extension:

The Asian Longhorn Beetle has become a problem, destroying trees and laying eggs. 88 infested tress so far. Make sure you check pallets for insect infestation. The 4H Fair will be at Stricker’s Grove July 10 – 12. Flower donations would help spruce up the place.

Farm Bureau:

July meeting is cancelled.

Cincinnati Zoo:

Plant Trials Day will be held on September 1^st from 8:00 to 5:00. They’re looking for some outside speakers. It will be held in the Schott Center at a projected cost of $40.

Old Business:

Bus Trip – Michigan grower tour will be August 9^th to 10^th.

A new committee has been formed to boost meetings. Dave Maile is leading the group. Surveys will be sent out with ideas. Education, humor, change of venue – lots of ideas have been suggested. A presentation will be made at the next meeting.

The Eason staff presented the 2011 California Spring Trials best picks. Please contact Eason if you would like to receive a copy of the booklet of recommendations that they have put together.

June 2011 Meeting Notes:

Welcome and Minutes

The meeting was hosted by McCabe’s. President Elmer Grosser called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for attending. He thanked McCabe’s for hosting. Mike McCabe introduced his family and staff, including new granddaughter Ava.

The minutes were approved as sent, with a motion made by Jesse Hensen and seconded by Mike McCabe.

Guests from Ohio State University were welcomed. Eric Berger, our newest member, was in attendance. Nick Folger was in attendance, also.

Treasurer’s Report

Scott McCabe gave the treasurer’s report. Payments were made to Krueger-Maddux for the April meeting. No bills were presented.

Things are looking good for the Short Course. Hotels are set. Registration is good. Who has pots for Short Course? They need them! Contact Mike for information. Krueger-Maddux is providing transportation for the pots.

Hamilton County Extension:

Extension Reloaded Tour was held today. Thanks to Adopt-A-Plant and Krueger-Maddux. Thanks to the Purdue folks for attending. We are thinking about alternating tours with Indiana growers. Would welcome your feedback on that. Next year’s tour will be on 6/6/12.

Farm Bureau:

Nothing to report.

Cincinnati Zoo:

Attendance is great. Annuals are about done. Thanks to Elmer, Ralph Ostendorf and Eason for plant material. They’re looking for vegetable plants for community gardens. The prognosis for the giraffe is good (broken leg). Blooms program for April was great.

Old Business:

OFA material – please donate. Kruger-Maddux will provide transportation.

Bus Trip – Michigan grower tour. Toledo growers would like to do a 1 night/2 day trip. Cleveland growers may join in. Looking at Mast and Pell. Elmer will put something together and send it out.

New Business:

Discussion will be forthcoming regarding WLWT website and sponsorship.

Discussion was held regarding meeting attendance and how to boost it.

The results of the Extension Reloaded Tour were presented by The Ohio State University staff.

April 2011 Meeting Notes:

Welcome and Minutes

The meeting was hosted by Krueger-Maddux. President Elmer Grosser called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for attending. He thanked Krueger-Maddux for hosting. Bob Maddux introduced his family and staff.

New Member Request

Berger has requested to become a member. A motion was made by Mike McCabe to accept them as members. The motion was seconded by Mike Benken.

Correspondence

A note was sent by the Sabath family, thanking the organization for their expression of sympathy for the death of Tom.

Treasurer’s Report

Scott McCabe gave the treasurer’s report. Payments were made to CNA for the treasurer’s bond and to Hortica. Deposits were made for dinners, split the pot, dues and the golf outing. No bills were presented.

Ballots have been mailed out so look for them to arrive in the mail. Let Mike McCabe know if you do not receive yours. Things are looking good for the Short Course.

Hamilton County Extension:

A contract has been signed with MSD to carry the Extension contract thru 2012. Please submit content for the website.

Farm Bureau:

4H will be moving to Stricker’s Grove.

Cincinnati Zoo:

Great material has been donated from Ball, Proven Winners. Bob’s Market, Eason. They are trialing some annual vines. The zoo looks fantastic right now.

Don’t forget Tunes and Blooms every Thursday in April.

Old Business:

10,000 pound truck laws were repealed. ODOT is looking at what they need to do. This is a victory for the Ohio small businesses.

Bus Trip – Michigan grower tour. Looking at August 10^th thru August 12^th. Raker’s, 4 Star, MSU Trial Gardens, Walter’s Gardens to name of few possibilities. Also, Mast Pell Greenhouses, Spring Meadow. We would do this in conjunction with the Toledo Flower Growers.

New Business:

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful – Mike Benken presented on the 25 spots that are available to take care of thru the Keep Cincinnati Beautiful program. May include mowing, litter control, etc. The Park Board cut upkeep out of their budget.

We would like to see some plant recommendations on the website. Please submit ideas.

History of Krueger-Maddux:

Krueger-Maddux Greenhouses originated in 1972, located on Devil’s Backbone Road in Cincinnati, thanks to William F. Krueger and Robert C. Maddux. The greenhouses provided plant material to independent garden centers and to wholesalers.

Maddux, assuming full ownership following the retirement of Krueger in 1979, chose to expand the greenhouse business in 1988. Farmland totaling 82 acres was purchased in the small town of Sunman, Indiana, located 45 miles west of the corporate headquarters in Cincinnati. A portion of the production at this new location started in 1989, while the entire production was eventually moved from the Devil’s Backbone Road location to Sunman in 1995.

Today, Krueger-Maddux Greenhouses provides plant material to retailers and wholesalers throughout Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Our knowledgeable growers specialize in a variety of products including annuals, hanging baskets, combination planters, garden mums, poinsettias, and perennials. Thousands of these plants are grown in a glass range that covers 2.5 acres, 64 plastic covered Quonset houses, and 5.5 acres of land for outdoor growing production. On the edge of technology, Krueger-Maddux Greenhouses employs the use of the bioremediated process for its water supply by filtering and reusing natural water collected in ponds.

The meeting was hosted by Bard’s, at The Bistro on Elm, at The Millennium Hotel. We were also invited to attend, as Bard’s guests, The Cincinnati Home And Garden Show, at The Duke Energy Center. President Elmer Grosser called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for attending. He thanked Bard’s for hosting.

The board meeting was held the last week of February and elections are coming up. Look for ballots to be delivered at the end of the month. There is a new show in Raleigh, NC – Southeast Greenhouse Conferences – in November. Membership is up. The new CEO is doing really well and is easy to work with.

Farm Bureau:

The legislature’s meeting will be held at The Boathouse.

University of Kentucky sent 20 students to the CAP GEN rain garden seminar.

The Spring Fling will be held at Sharon Woods on March 21^st.

New Business:

Rich Batcho needs material to be donated to the OFA Short Course. He needs planters, mixed pots, whatever you would like to grow.

Deb Zureick, of The Cincinnati Zoo, wanted to let everyone know that The Zoo will be hosting Tunes and Blooms in April. Tables will be set up for flower growers to seel their goods. April 7^th’s theme will be Flower Power. April 14^th’s theme will be Local Harvest. April 28^th’s theme will be Tree Festival. April 21^st is Earth Day. Beth Harnist participated last year and said that she really enjoyed it.

Talks are underway for a potential bus trip to Michigan, in August, with the Toledo Flower Growers. The trip would be the first week in August to Michigan State for the trial gardens.

Bard’s History:

In 1964, Stan and Jean Bard bought a tree farm in Mount Holly, and two years later, acquired a garden center on Ridge Avenue, in Pleasant Ridge. Six years later, they sold the tree farm, bought wooded lots along Beechmont Avenue to start a nursery and moved the garden center there. In 1970, Clint Sr. helped his dad open the nursery on Beechmont. And, then, before you knew it, all three of Clint’s sons – Clint, Jr., Bob and Doug – started getting involved in the family business.

In 1998, the nursery relocated to its current spot along Beechmont Avenue, because road changes encroached on the property. So, they again started from the ground up. Now the garden center is run by Clint, Sr., his wife Kathy, and two sons, Bob and Doug, along with their wives, Elizabeth and Teresa.

We have taken great pride in all our booths at the Home and Garden Show and we believe this year’s will be the best. We hope everyone comes to visit.

February 2011 Meeting Notes:

Welcome and Minutes

The meeting was hosted by Waldo and Associates, at Romano’s Macaroni Grill. President Elmer Grosser called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for attending. He thanked Brian and his organization for hosting.

A correction was made to the minutes – OFA winter meetings will be held February 18^th and 19^th.

Treasurer’s Report

Scott McCabe gave the treasurer’s report. Deposits were made for dinners and split-the-pot. No bills were presented.

Mike let everyone know that the Winter meetings will be held on February 18^th and 19^th.

Mike brought up that he would like to know what we can do it make more people want to come to CFGA meetings. What can we do to improve meetings and business?

Hamilton County Extension/Flower Show:

265 paid attendees were at the Tri-State Green Expo.

On February 23, there will be a water management seminar at The Cincinnati Zoo.

Farm Bureau:

The Spring Fling will be held on March 21^st.

Cincinnati Zoo:

Old Business:

Roger found more information on the truck regulations – 10,000 gross vehicle weight; there are very complicated regulations; drug testing is required; 3 year background check is required; inspection of truck daily; 10 hours limit on driving by a driver. There is a survey about the regulations in the Buckeye News Bulletin.

Representative Mecklenburg is working on Worker’s Compensation and wants horror stories about the system so that they can be used to reform the system. Please contact him if you have had an issue.

New Business:

The 2011 budget was presented – budgeted for 4 less members and 5 less dinners per meeting. Mike McCabe made the motion, seconded by Ron Robben, to accept the budget for 2011.

Payment to the web master was discussed. Ralph Ostendorf made the motion, seconded by Mike McCabe, to pay the web master.

The Indy Flower Growers are planning a trip to the California Trials. Contact Roberto Lopez if you would like to go.
